Former Newcastle United footballer Sammy Ameobi has found himself in legal trouble after being involved in a car accident that injured a teenage girl and fleeing the scene. During court proceedings, it was revealed that the ex-player now works as an apprentice, earning just £360 a week, The Sun reports.
Ameobi, who played 264 matches across various English leagues and reportedly earned around £6.4 million during his career, appears to have struggled to secure a similarly lucrative role post-retirement.
The incident involved Ameobi crashing his Audi E-Tron, with a personalized license plate, into another car carrying a 19-year-old girl. The former footballer fled the scene, leaving the injured teenager in the damaged vehicle.
After being tracked down and brought to court, Ameobi pleaded guilty and was ordered to pay a £240 fine for court costs and £181 in compensation to the victim.
"I did not get any sleep. I had started an apprenticeship after quite a long time out of work. I was rushing to get to work and worried about my son. I just panicked at that moment. That is all that was," Ameobi confessed during the proceedings.
